The Brazilian government is preparing a type of “payroll-deduction loan” for micro and small business owners, based on their revenue generated through Pix, the country’s instant payment system. This initiative is being developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank, as part of efforts to reduce the cost of credit in Brazil.
The concept is for entrepreneurs to use their Pix receivables flow as collateral to secure bank loans. “Part of the revenue will be received through Pix, and another part will be allocated to repay the financing they have with the bank,” said Marcos Pinto, Secretary of Economic Reforms at the Ministry of Finance “It’s like a retailer’s payroll-deduction loan.”
As a security measure, Mr. Pinto said, there will be a limit on the number of Pix keys that business owners can create.
Carla Beni, an economist and professor at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), predicts a more challenging environment for small business owners in 2025, with higher interest rates and increased credit costs. The Selic benchmark policy rate is currently at 12.25% per year, and the Central Bank has indicated it may implement two more hikes, potentially raising the rate to 14.25% per year by March.

He alleges a New York cash advance company charged an “illegal, usurious” interest rate of 409%.
MyPillow and CEO Mike Lindell are suing another merchant cash advance company over an allegedly illegal loan.
The Chaska-based manufacturer borrowed $1.5 million from Cobalt Funding Solutionsin September and agreed to make 50 daily payments for a total repayment of $2.2 million, according to a lawsuit filed last week in Carver County District Court.
The resulting 409% interest rate is “many times greater than the maximum interest rate permitted under the applicable state usury law,” the suit says.
“Cobalt ... took advantage of MyPillow, a cash-strapped business that needed funds quickly,” the complaint says. “This transaction is an illegal, usurious loan,” and MyPillow wants a judge to declare the loan unenforceable and award unspecified damages.
Cobalt did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday.
The suit is nearly identical to one filed in October that accused other merchant cash advance firms of violating federal racketeering laws and making an allegedly illegal $600,000 loan.
The companies essentially offer payday loans for businesses, and the industry “engages in loan sharking,” the lawsuit says. In this case, Cobalt offered to buy MyPillow’s future receivables and later filed a lien against the pillow maker to seize funds.

The purchase of future receivables was “merely a sham intended to evade the applicable usury law,” the complaint says. “Lenders ... ensure that they will be repaid at grossly inflated rates by hook or by crook.”
Cobalt says on its website it offers “revenue-based financing” and “swift financial solutions.”
That MyPillow sought out such funding shows a company in desperate need of cash.
MyPillow has suffered a run of setbacks in recent years, which began with major retailers pulling the pillows from shelves in response to Lindell’s unproven claims of election fraud in 2020. Sales have fallen, credit has been harder to come by and vendors and landlords have launched several suits over unpaid bills this year.

Lindell, now described in recent court documents as a Texas resident, also remains mired in defamation claims brought by voting machine companies. Those suits have yet to reach trial and could result in more than $1 billion in judgments.

Savon Sanomat was among the papers carrying an STT news agency report that one in two Finnish mortgage borrowers has reduced spending on daily expenses or switched to buying more affordable products due to rising prices and interest rates.
The figure is from a survey released by Danske Bank which also showed that about half have had to reduce expenditure on non-essential consumption, such as clothing purchases and restaurant meals.
"Some households have been disproportionately affected by the rise in prices and interest rates. In the big picture, however, Finnish mortgage borrowers are doing well. Although reducing everyday expenses is currently a common topic of conversation, according to the study, it affects only every second Finnish mortgage debtor," Sari Takala, Danske Bank's head of personal loan services is quoted as saying in a release.
Conducted by YouGov Finland, the survey asked respondents how they had adjusted their spending.
A quarter said that they have not had to make any changes in their finances due to rising interest rates or prices. Ten percent said that they have had to postpone the payment of some other bills. Eight percent answered that they had to rely on financial help from family members. Six percent had had to take out a new loan.
"It's good to remember that everyone has their own, personal level of inflation. If there is no room for manoeuvre in your own finances, you should find out from your bank whether, for example, an extension of the loan period or a repayment holiday would help the situation," Takala said.

Ilta-Sanomat reports that WHO figures show Finland to have registered the largest number of Covid deaths per one million inhabitants in Europe over the past 12 months.
Lasse Lehtonen, director of diagnostics at the Helsinki Universitry Hospital HUS, pointed out that the WHO collects statistical data from every country in the same way, with all persons who tested positive for coronavirus infections who have died within 30 days of infection being counted as Covid deaths.

Over the past year, more than 3,000 deaths from coronavirus infections have been recorded in Finland, which put the country at the top of the per capita list in Europe.
The overall total number of deaths attributed to coronavirus in Finland exceeded 10,000 at the beginning of July 2023. The total number in Finland is now clearly higher than in Norway and Denmark, which are roughly the same size in terms of population, but also clearly more densely populated.

For Sarika Shetty, the dream of homeownership hit a roadblock when a bank rejected her loan application, citing overexposure to car loans. Shetty, who had been diligently paying rent for years, argued that her consistent rental payments should be considered as a positive financial indicator.
However, the bank’s systems lacked a mechanism to account for rental history. This rejection, though frustrating, helped her to uncover a significant blind spot in the financial system and spurred her to start RentenPe, a company pioneering India’s first rental score system.
Shetty’s story isn’t unique. A new wave of fintech innovators are leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP) and blockchain to unearth hidden revenue opportunities, address overlooked customer segments, and create innovative products that were previously inconceivable.
“With nearly 50% of India’s population under the age of 40, many young professionals relocate from smaller towns to major cities,” said Shetty. “These individuals often dedicate a substantial portion of their income – up to 30% – to rent, while aspiring to own a home.”

The impact of AI is also being felt in the decentralised finance (DeFi) space. Himanshu Maradiya, founder and chairman of CIFDAQ, an AI-powered blockchain ecosystem company, said AI has unlocked new revenue opportunities and enhanced personalisation in the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry.
“AI-powered predictive trading models and automated decision-making in DeFi have opened up new revenue streams by optimising tokenomics and executing complex, high-speed market analyses,” said Maradiya. This allows for more accurate trading decisions and market predictions, far exceeding the capabilities of manual processes.
Personalisation is another key area where fintech innovators are making strides. MyFi, a conversational AI-powered investment advisor, provides tailored wealth management recommendations to Indian consumers.
Kiran Nambiar, co-founder and CEO of MyFi, said: “MyFi leverages a combination of AI models built and back-tested over years by a team of seasoned investment professionals, considering market data, historical trends and various factors.
